Distance and Online Learning

Distance Learning service provides coordination and technical support that enables schools to offer courses they otherwise would not be able to offer.  The service utilizes a state-of-the-art interactive telecommunications system to teach courses simultaneously in several different high school buildings at once.  Currently there are 46 districts teaching over 100 course sections over the network.  Locally, the following school districts participate in the Distance Learning service.  Averill Park, Berlin, Cairo-Durham, Catskill, Coxsackie-Athens, East Greenbush, Hoosic Valley, Schodack, Taconic Hills, and Troy.  For news regarding the service, as well as current course offerings and shared course planning, go to http://dl.neric.org/bdlp/news.htm

Online Learning provides an option to school districts as they face increased requirements, limited resources, shortage of personnel and scheduling conflicts.  Online Learning takes place using the internet and is personalized and highly flexible.  Questar III currently works with 5 different vendors providing course options to schools for credit accrual and credit recovery.

Virtual Advanced Placement grant is a NYSED grant that is funded through the federal Race to the Top program.  The grant’s objective is to provide support to school districts to build and strengthen their capacity for college and career-ready preparation of students.  This grant focuses specifically on providing assistance to low income students who traditionally are underrepresented in participation of AP coursework.  There are 3 main goals  of the grant.

  • Goal 1 is to provide low income students access to vendor created AP coursework in a virtual learning environment, computer hardware for students, and funding for costs of the AP exams.
  • Goal 2 is to provide training to teachers to increase their knowledge and skills in design and delivery of AP course content in a virtual environment.
  • Goal 3 provides funding for the design and pilot of locally developed AP virtual courses by district teachers.
